Protection of personal data at the European Parliament

When processing personal data, the European Parliament shows full respect for the rights of the individuals (data subjects) concerned.

In order to meet its obligations vis-à-vis its staff and European citizens alike, the European Parliament frequently needs to know personal data, such as name and address or other, at times more sensitive, information.

The European Parliament processes such data in accordance with the conditions imposed by Regulation (EC) No. 45/2001 and guarantees the rights recognised therein. The Regulation aims to protect the fundamental freedoms and rights of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data pertaining to them. The purpose of the Regulation is to facilitate the free movement of information within a framework which guarantees the rights of individuals (or data subjects in the terms of the Regulation) and their legitimate expectation that their right to privacy be respected.

These provisions concern all departments within the European Parliament which use information identifying individuals. The Data Protection Officer must be notified in advance of all operations involving such data (data collection, consultation, transmission, organisation, etc.) whereupon it is entered into a public register.

Data Protection - a guide for users

One of the responsibilities of the Data Protection Service is to inform those processing data and those whose data is being processed, i.e. the data subjects, of their rights and obligations. This guide explains how data protection works and shows you where you stand with regard to data protection.

Register of notified personal data processing operations

The register of notified personal data processing operations allows individuals to obtain information on the processing of personal data in the European Parliament.

The Data Protection Officer ensures that Regulation (EC) No. 45/2001 is properly implemented. One of his tasks (see Article 27 of the Regulation) is to keep a register containing a detailed description of all personal data processing operations carried out by the European Parliament.

The Register is intended to inform the public about the existence of personal data processing operations notified within the European Parliament. All persons concerned may exercise their rights as recognised by the Regulation on the basis of the information contained in the Register.

The Register is freely accessible to all via the Internet.

The search results obtained for each notified data processing operation are available only in the language used for entering the particular notification into the Register (either English or French).
