EMAS is the environmental management system (EMS) used by the European Parliament in accordance with ISO 14001:2004 standards and EMAS Regulation (EC) No 1221/2009.
The European Parliament recognises that it has a duty to make a positive contribution to sustainable development as a long-term goal, not only through its political role and its role in legislative procedures, but also in the context of how it operates and the decisions that it makes on a day-to-day basis.
The Bureau therefore launched the EMAS project in the Parliament with the decision of 19 April 2004. The President and Secretary-General signed the Parliament's Environmental Policy which contains guidelines for its own environmental management system which includes:
In 2007 the first external audit was completed and the European Parliament obtained the ISO 14001.2004 certification and has now received the EMAS registration in Brussels, Luxembourg and Strasbourg.
