The European Parliament’s central historical archives (CARDOC) provide access to various papers of current and former Members.
The papers have been selected according to different procedures. From 2004 to 2010, the European Parliament operated a scheme to provide grants to national foundations and associations which hold the papers of former Members. The scheme enabled the papers to be organised, catalogued and made available to citizens, subject to national provisions governing public access to documents and the protection of confidential data.

Since 2011 this project has developed into the direct collection of papers of former and past Members by CARDOC by means of a call for expressions of interest and the selection of papers of historical importance. The papers selected for archiving were arranged and catalogued in CARDOC’s database in accordance with international archiving rules. They have also been digitised or converted to PDF/A format.
