Highlights

Joint ECON-CRIS seminar on Monetary Exit Strategies and Systemic Risk  
On 1 December, 10.00-12.30h, the ECON and CRIS Committees will hold a joint seminar (room PHS 3 C 50). ECON's monetary expert panel will discuss with the ECON and CRIS members the issues of monetary exit strategies and systemic risk. These topics will also be discussed with the ECB President, Jean-Claude Trichet, in the next Monetary Dialogue which will take place on 7 December, 14.00-16.00h (room PHS 3 C 50).

Alternative Investment Fund Managers  
On 10 November, ECON held a two hour hearing, followed by a workshop on the Alternative Investment Funds Managers Directive (covering hedge funds, private equity and other non-UCITS mutual funds). At the Hearing, representatives of industry (managers and investors), of supervisory authorities and trade unions presented their views on the Commission's proposal and engaged in a debate with the Members of the ECON Committee.
In the afternoon, academics discussed with ECON Members the morning Hearing in a Workshop.

Presentation and competencies

Committee responsible for:
 
1.    the economic and monetary policies of the Union, the functioning of Economic and Monetary Union and the European monetary and financial system (including relations with the relevant institutions or organisations);
 
2.    the free movement of capital and payments (cross-border payments, single payment area, balance of payments, capital movements and borrowing and lending policy, control of movements of capital originating in third countries, measures to encourage the export of the Union's capital);
 
3.    the international monetary and financial system (including relations with financial and monetary institutions and organisations);
 
4.    rules on competition and State or public aid;
 
5.    tax provisions;
 
6.    the regulation and supervision of financial services, institutions and markets including financial reporting, auditing, accounting rules, corporate governance and other company law matters specifically concerning financial services.
