Highlights

Joint AFET / DEVE / DROI meeting with 2009 Sakharov Prize Laureates 
At an extraordinary joint meeting in Strasbourg, the Committees on Foreign Affairs, on Development and the Subcommittee on Human Rights will hold an exchange of views with Mr Oleg Orlov, Mr Sergei Kovalev and Mrs Lyudmila Alexeyeva on behalf of MEMORIAL and all other human rights defenders in Russia, laureate of the Sakharov Prize for the Freedom of Thought in 2009. The meeting will take place on Thursday, 17.12.2009 from 09h00 - 10h30 in room LOW N1.4. and will be webstreamed.

Responsibilities of the Subcommittee

The Subcommittee's main responsibilities are set out in Section I(5) of Annex VII of the Rules of Procedure of the European Parliament:
 
'- issues concerning human rights, the protection of minorities and the promotion of democratic values in third countries: In this context the committee [on foreign affairs] is assisted by a subcommittee on human rights. Without prejudice to the relevant rules, members from other committees and bodies with responsibilities in this field shall be invited to attend the meetings of the subcommittee.'
