Highlights
Human Rights Council DROI will hold an exchange of views on 22 February on the UN Human Rights Council in view of the forthcoming DROI delegation (14-16 March) to the 13th session of the UN HRC.
European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms The Members will discuss the draft report on the ¨Institutional aspects of accession by the European Union to the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms¨. The rapporteur (AFCO) is Ramón Jáuregui Atondo, (S&D) and the draftsman for opinion (AFET) is Cristian Dan Preda (EPP). The issue of accession of the European Union to the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms is explicitly addressed in Article 6. 2 of the Treaty establishing the European Union, as revised by the Treaty of Lisbon. EU Accession has now become a constitutional obligation. The draft report presents the institutional aspects of the accession.
DROI public hearing on EU accession to UN Convention on Disabilities - 22 February The hearing will focus on three main aspects - the Convention and its ratifications/signatures; EU policy on disabilities and access of the EU to the UN Convention; and the impact of the instrument on society. Speakers will include Ms Erzsébet Szöllősi, Vice President of the European Disability Forum, as well as representatives from the UN, the Commission and the Council.

Responsibilities of the Subcommittee
The Subcommittee's main responsibilities are set out in Section I(5) of Annex VII of the Rules of Procedure of the European Parliament: '- issues concerning human rights, the protection of minorities and the promotion of democratic values in third countries: In this context the committee [on foreign affairs] is assisted by a subcommittee on human rights. Without prejudice to the relevant rules, members from other committees and bodies with responsibilities in this field shall be invited to attend the meetings of the subcommittee.'
