Next Committee meeting
The next Committee meeting will take place on 22 and 23 February 2010, from 15.00-18.30, in Brussels. The public hearing on "Europe's Universities - Challenges and responses" will take place on 23 February 2010, from 15.00-18.15. Vote on "Europeana – the next steps" On 22 February, the Committee will adopt its report on Europeana - the EU's online library, museum and archive: the report was prepared by the Committee's first vice-chair, Mrs. Helga Trüpel (GREENS). Launched in November 2008 as part of the Commission's digital libraries initiative, Europeana aims to make Europe's cultural and intellectual heritage accessible to all via internet. At present, Europeana is in its development phase and the Commission Communication on which the Committee's report is based sets out possible options for the project's future: the main questions concern content (what should Europeana contain?) and governance (how should it be run and who should pay for it?).
Priorities of the Spanish Presidency The Spanish Ministers Mr Angel Gabilondo (Education) and Mrs Angeles Gonzalez-Sinde (Culture) presented the priorities of the Spanish Presidency of the Council in their respective areas. The ministers' presentations were followed by question and answer sessions with MEPs. The ministers' speeches are available online.
Exchange of views on the World Anti-Doping Agency On 26 January, the Committee held an exchange of views with Mr David Howman, Director General of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Established in 1999 as an independent international agency, WADA's mission is to globally promote, coordinate and monitor the fight against doping in sport in all its forms. The presentation given by Mr Howman is available online.
An EU Strategy for Youth – Investing and Empowering On 26 January, Mr. Papanikolaou presented his draft report on "An EU strategy for youth". Based on a Commission Communication on youth, the draft report is a response to the renewed framework for European cooperation in the youth field (2010–2018), adopted by the Council on 27 November 2009. The deadline for amendments is 8 February and the report will be adopted in the Committee on 23 March. The draft report is available online.
