Extraordinary meeting to adopt a report on the "European Year of Volunteering 2011" On 23 November, CULT will adopt its report (consultation procedure) on the proposal for a European Year of Volunteering 2011. The rapporteur, Mr. Marco Scurria (EPP, IT), has held extensive discussions with the Swedish presidency to persuade the Council to take account of Parliament's concerns, especially the need for a larger budget. He hopes that it will be possible to adopt the act before the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty, so giving the Commission time to prepare the Year. Exchange of views with Commissioner-designate Šefčovič On 10 November, the Committee held a wide-ranging exchange of views Mr. Maros Šefčovič, previously the Slovak ambassador to the EU and now Commissioner-designate responsible for education and culture. The Commissioner presented a retrospective survey of the work of his directorate-general over the lifetime of the outgoing Commission and looked ahead to some of the more important developments likely in 2010/11 - proposals for a sports programme, a European heritage label, and the next generation of multiannual programmes (for example, Lifelong Learning).
Public hearing on "Volunteering" Three out of ten Europeans take part in some form of voluntary activity, and almost eight out of ten consider helping others an important part of their lives. Recognising that volunteering is an important way of participating in the life of society and showing solidarity with others, the European Commission has proposed that 2011 be designated "European Year of Volunteering". On 10 November, the Committee held a public hearing on the subject. Speakers included the director of the European Volunteer Centre: their speeches are available online.
Exchange of views on the LUX Prize 2009 The LUX Prize is the Parliament's prize for European films which highlight European issues and themes: the prize pays for subtitling of the winning film in all the official languages and supports the DVD release or production of a 35 mm print in each Member State. The 2009 contenders - "Eastern Plays", "Sturm" and "Welcome" - are currently (3-20 November) being screened in the Parliament and the prize will be presented in the hemicycle in Strasbourg on 25 November by President Buzek. On 10 November, the Committee held an exchange of views with the directors of two of the three competing films; and with the director and an actress from the first film to win the prize ("Auf der anderen Seite"), which is now being released in a 30-language version (a world premiere).
