On 15 July the ENVI Committee voted on the draft report by Julie Girling "Reduction of national emissions of certain atmospheric pollutants". The ambition level for national emission reductions for 2020, 2025 and 2030 as well as the regulation of ammonia and methane are among the key issues addressed in the 615 amendments and compromise amendments which were put to the vote.

On 16 July, the ENVI Committee considered the amendments on the draft report "Towards a new international climate agreement in Paris", which sets the main EP objectives for an ambitious, universal and binding international agreement in the Paris COP21. The MEPs debated on the 230 amendments submitted in order to define the position of the Parliament, which will also serve as the mandate of the 15-MEP mission to the Paris COP21 in December 2015.

Exchange of views (EoV) with Mr Miguel Arias Cañete

On 15 July, the ENVI Committee held an EoV with Miguel Arias Cañete, Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, in the context of the Energy Union summer package, which is due to be adopted on 15 July itself. The package is likely to include a legislative proposal to revise the ETS Directive.

GMO imports: MEPs object to draft law allowing national bans, call for plan B

A draft EU law that would enable any member state to restrict or prohibit the use of EU-approved GMO food or feed on its territory was strongly opposed by MEPs from all political groups in a debate on Wednesday. Members were concerned that the draft did not include an impact assessment, that member state measures might not be compatible with single market or WTO rules and that the proposal might prove unworkable. Air quality: Environment MEPs call for tougher new national caps on pollutants

As air pollution is responsible for around 400,000 premature deaths in the EU yearly, Environment MEPs on Wednesday tightened up Commission plans and called for more ambitious national caps on emissions of six main pollutants, such as sulphur dioxide, particulate matter and nitrogen oxides in order to cut emissions by 70% across the EU and save €40bn in air pollution costs by 2030. MEPs also want to include emissions reduction ceilings on mercury, and a midpoint target for most caps of 2025. (Ler mais)
