On Thursday, 28 May, from 9.00 to 12.30 and from 14.30 to 18.00, and Friday, 29 May, from 9.00 to 12.00, room Joszef Antall (JAN) 2Q2, LIBE Committee, together with the Belgian House of Representatives' Committee responsible for monitoring the Standing Committee P and the Standing Committee I, the German Bundestag's Parliamentary Oversight Panel and the Italian Parliament's Committee for the Security of the Republic (COPASIR) are jointly organising an Interparliamentary Committee meeting on Democratic oversight of intelligence services in the EU, as a follow up to paragraph 133 of the European Parliament resolution of 12 March 2014 on the USA surveillance programme, surveillance bodies in various Member States and their impact on EU citizens' fundamental rights and on the transatlantic cooperation in Justice and Home Affairs (2013/2188 (INI)).

On Tuesday, 26 May in room Paul-Henri Spaak (PHS) 3C050, the LIBE Committee will hold an exchange of views with Ms Vĕra Jourová, Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality on the implementation of the 2015 Commission Work Programme (CWP) and the priorities for the 2016 CWP, as foreseen in the Framework Agreement between the European Parliament and the Commission.

Thousands of migrants attempt crossing the Mediterranean every year, and some of them are saved from drowning by the Frontex operation. But that is not its mission.

In the LIBE Meeting on Wednesday, 6 May from 15.00 to 17.00, Members had an exchange of views with Zoe Konstantopoulou, President of the Hellenic Parliament, Admiral Filippo Maria Foffi, Commander in chief of the Italian Navy, Brig. Ret'd Martin Xuereb, Director of the Migrant Offshore Aid Station, as well as with Professor Philippe De Bruycker, MPC/EUI, coordinator Odysseus network, on the situation in the Mediterranean and the need for a holistic EU approach to migration (co-rapporteurs Roberta Metsola (EPP, MT) and Kashetu Kyenge (S&D, IT)).
The subject matter of the debate was Article 80 TFEU - Solidarity and fair sharing of responsibility, including search and rescue obligations.

Unaccompanied minors’ asylum applications: process where the kids are, say MEPs

EU asylum applications for unaccompanied minors should be processed in the EU country where the child is present, even if this is not where the child first applied, said Civil Liberties Committee MEPs on Wednesday. Processing where children are present is usually in their best interests, and avoids moving them unnecessarily between member states, say the committee’s amendments to the Dublin Regulation, which determines which member state should examine asylum applications. Fair trials: MEPs strengthen EU-wide standards for legal aid

People who are suspected or accused of a crime, or are named in a European Arrest Warrant, but cannot afford a lawyer or court proceedings, should have access to EU member state funding and assistance for both “provisional” and "ordinary” legal aid, say Civil Liberties MEPs in amendments, voted on Wednesday, to a proposed EU directive on fair trial rights.
