The next meeting of the Subcommittee on Human Rights will take place on Thursday, 16 April 2015 from 9 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.

You can watch our meetings live on line at the link below. Since there are limited possibilities for individuals to attend Subcommittee meetings visitors should register with the Secretariat by email five working days prior to the start of the meeting. Representatives of NGOs as well as other organisations are requested to accede to the EU Transparency Register and follow the procedures therein for access to the European Parliament.

The need for a balance in supply and demand side interventions in the fight against human trafficking was highlighted in a human rights subcommittee hearing on Thursday morning. MEPs debated with Beate Andrees from ILO, Sebastian Boll, from UN-ACT and Markéta Hronková, from La Strada Czech Republic, on the various facets of human trafficking and the EU response.

The European Parliament's Subcommittee on Human Rights is organising a hearing on the fight against human trafficking in the EU's external relations, which will take place on 16 April 2015. The objective of this hearing is to assess the magnitude of different categories of trafficking in human beings, identifying the end profiteers, as well as addressing the issue of victims' rights. The ensuing debate will serve as a basis to the upcoming DROI report on the same topic.

Democracy and values are problematic in DRC, says Denis Mukwege

Dr Denis Mukwege, the 2014 Sakharov Prize laureate, described political problems in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and his difficulties in tackling the problem of sexual abuse of women and even small children, in a Human Rights Subcommittee debate on Thursday. MEPs discussed how the EU could best support Dr Mukwege’s work, and some called for legally-binding rules on trade in conflict minerals. (Fortsetzung lesen)
