A committee is permitted to organise a hearing with experts, where this is considered essential to its work on a particular subject. Hearings can also be held jointly by two or more committees. Most committees organise regular hearings, as they allow them to hear from experts and hold discussions on the key issues. On 18 March 2019, AFCO organised a public hearing on "European Parliamentary Elections, European Parties, European Voters". Three experts were invited: - Ms Claire McGing, Maynooth University - Dr. Marina Costa Lobo, University of Lisbon - Prof. Juan Rodríguez Teruel, University of Valencia - as well as representatives of the Commission and Parliament dealing with communication campaigns.

This hearing looked into issues like the role of political parties (at national and European level) in the European elections and their capacity to mobilise electors, and the influence of modern means of communication and social networks in the shaping of voters' political choices, as well as the coordination of communication campaigns between Parliament and Commission in the wake of the elections.
