2018 marks the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The European Parliament has made full use of its powers to contribute to shaping the EU’s policies and instruments in advancing human rights both inside and outside the EU. To renew its commitment a Human Rights Week has been organised by the European Parliament and the ENVI Committee held on 20 November an exchange of views (EoV) with Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General.

According to the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights - Article 35 "Everyone has the right of access to preventive health care and the right to benefit from medical treatment under the conditions established by national laws and practices. A high level of human health protection shall be ensured in the definition and implementation of all Union policies and activities." In this respect, the EoV mainly focused on the core themes related to the human rights dimension in public health, such as the EU role in global health, the access to medicines and vaccination. Several committees were invited to gather MEPs who devote special attention to public health issues wishing to accelerate progress to health-related Sustainable Development Goals. This meeting was also an opportunity to leave in legacy a possible intergroup as of next legislature. In this context, as tangible sign of the wish to close cooperation between WHO and the EP, the meeting concluded with the signature of a Joint Statement.
