Hearings


A committee is permitted to organise a hearing with experts, where this is considered essential to its work on a particular subject. Hearings can also be held jointly by two or more committees. Most committees organise regular hearings, as they allow them to hear from experts and hold discussions on the key issues. On Thursday 6 September, the PEST Committee organised a public hearing with two expert panels. In the first part environmental impacts of pesticides and possible mitigation measures at Member State level were presented and discussed. Invited experts were Mr Jeroen VAN DER SLUIJS (University of Bergen), Ms Noa SIMÓN-DELSO (Belgian Bee Keeping Center for Research and Information) and Mr Ettore CAPRI (Catholic University of Sacred Heart, Piacenza). On Thursday 30 August, the European Parliament's Special Committee on the Union’s authorisation procedure for pesticides organised a public hearing entitled “EU authorisation procedure for pesticides - Comparative analysis of authorisation procedures in OECD countries”. The meeting consisted of 10-minute presentations given by each of the speakers followed by a question and answer round with the Members of the Committee. (Read more)

On 12 July IMCO held a public hearing on the implementation of the Late Payment Directive. The first panel examined business-to-business (B2B) transactions, featuring speakers representing business associations. The second panel focused on public authorities-to-businesses transactions (P2B), with speakers concentrating on problems reported on the ground and on measures that could be employed by public administrations to tackle this issue. On 11 July IMCO held a public hearing on the post-REFIT proposal on the revision of consumer law. Members, and experts discussed on better enforcement and modernisation of EU consumer protection rules. The Subcommittee on Human Rights, together with the Committee on Development, will hold a hearing on "Cocoa and Coffee – devastating rainforest and driving child labour : the role of EU consumption, and how the EU could help" This hearing will outline the impact of coffee and cocoa production on deforestation and child labour, and will aim to propose concrete ways on how the EU could act.
