Hearings


A committee is permitted to organise a hearing with experts, where this is considered essential to its work on a particular subject. Hearings can also be held jointly by two or more committees. Most committees organise regular hearings, as they allow them to hear from experts and hold discussions on the key issues. On the 19 November, the JURI Committee with Elisabeth Morin-Chartier MEP and EP Coordinator on Children’s Rights will host a public hearing on safeguarding the rights of the child in cross-border family disputes. The event is organised in the context of the work of the Coordinator in cross-border parental child abduction and family disputes. (Read more)

The Committee held a Public Hearing on “Models of cooperation to strengthen farmers’ position in the food chain - with a particular focus on the dairy sector”. The LIBE and FEMM Committees are jointly presenting the new report of the European Institute for Gender Equality on "Gender-specific measures in anti-trafficking actions". The report includes guidance on the implementation of the anti-trafficking directive in a gender specific manner. Guest speakers will be Dr Myria Vassiliadou, EU Anti-Trafficking Coordinator and Ms Virginia Langbakk, Director of the Europe Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE). (Read more)

On 11 October the Subcommittee on Human Rights will hold a hearing on contemporary forms of slavery in third countries, which will address the many practices of contemporary slavery such as forced labour, debt bondage, serfdom, child labour, sexual slavery and servile forms of marriage. Experts will also discuss the root causes of slavery and ways in which to effectively eradicate slavery in all its forms. (Read more)

On 10 October, the INTA Committee organized a public hearing on Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and Investment Protection Agreement (IPA) between the European Union and Vietnam. The agreements were concluded recently and the European Parliament will be requested to give its consent to these historic deals. The hearing hosted chief negotiators of the agreements from both sides, as well as experts and stakeholders (business, human rights, including labour and environment) from the EU and from Vietnam.
