Hearings


A committee is permitted to organise a hearing with experts, where this is considered essential to its work on a particular subject. Hearings can also be held jointly by two or more committees. Most committees organise regular hearings, as they allow them to hear from experts and hold discussions on the key issues. The Committee on Legal Affairs will hold a public hearing on the Reform of the Judiciary in Ukraine on 14 June 2016, at 15.30-18.30 in JAN 6Q2 in association with the Delegation to the EU-Ukraine Parliamentary Association Committee. Justice Commissioner Věra Jourová will make introductory remarks at the event, which will bring together Ukrainian civil society representatives and public leaders, including Deputy Speaker Oksana Syroid and Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko. The IMCO and JURI committees held jointly a public hearing with experts and stakeholders on contractual relations and consumer remedies in the digital sphere. The first part of the joint hearing was focus on contracts for the supply of digital content. The second part held by the Internal Market Committee only focused on contracts for the online sales of goods. (Read more)

A hearing was jointly organised by the European Commission (DG Justice and Consumers) and the European Parliament (LIBE, PETI, AFCO and JURI Committees) on 15 March 2016. The hearing gave a timely opportunity to further reflect, with all actors concerned, on concrete avenues to advance EU citizenship. (Read more)

On 14 March, from 15.00 to 16.30, in room ASP 5E2, the JURI committee will held a hearing on the protection of vulnerable adults. This is a major issue, as there is an increasing number of mobile senior citizens within the European Union. Each Member State has a legal system in place to protect such persons, but there is no effective system to ensure that the protection remains in place following a move - or even during a temporary stay - in an other Member State. On 28 January, the JURI Committee is organising a hearing on a Law of Administrative Procedure for the EU, from 9.30 to 12.15. The purpose of the hearing is to present a draft Regulation on the Administrative Procedure of the EU institutions, bodies, offices and agencies, drawn up by the Working Group on Administrative Law (chaired by MEP Heidi Hautala). Experts, stakeholders and high-ranking officials from the institutions will participate. (Read more)

The Committee on Legal Affairs and the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality held a joint mini-hearing between 3.00 and 4.00 p.m. on 12 November 2015 during the joint meeting scheduled for that moment. The hearing focused on the current situation regarding the inclusion of women in company boards across the EU and the potential benefits it entails for society and for the company itself. (Read more)
