A committee is permitted to organise a hearing with experts, where this is considered essential to its work on a particular subject. Hearings can also be held jointly by two or more committees. Most committees organise regular hearings, as they allow them to hear from experts and hold discussions on the key issues. On Thursday 30 August, the European Parliament's Special Committee on the Union’s authorisation procedure for pesticides organised a public hearing entitled “EU authorisation procedure for pesticides - Comparative analysis of authorisation procedures in OECD countries”. The meeting consisted of 10-minute presentations given by each of the speakers followed by a question and answer round with the Members of the Committee.

Its aim was to provide the latter with an insight into the authorisation procedures for pesticides in Australia, Canada and the US. Invited experts were Chris Parker (Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority), Richard Aucoin (Canadian Pest Management Regulatory Agency) and Richard Keigwin (Office of Pesticide Programs, US Environmental Protection Agency).
