Presentation of the draft report on the Use of PNR data - 26/02

The PNR legislative proposal (2011/0023(COD)) is pending since 2011. It has been rejected in LIBE and referred back to the Committee by plenary in 2013. The main points of discussion in the past were the necessity and proportionality of the proposal, scope (list of offences), retention periods, intra/international flights, data protection issues and connection with the on-going data protection reform, as well as recently consequences of the ECJ data retention judgment. The LIBE Rapporteur Mr.Timothy KIRKHOPE (ECR) prepared a new version of the draft report which will be presented on 26 February 2015 in the LIBE Committee. Further steps and time-table in the committee will be announced shortly.

Study "Cross-border Parental Child Abduction in the European Union"

Child abduction

Upon request by the European Parliament's Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE), this study aims at analysing the international, European and national legal framework applicable to cross-border parental child abduction, with a view to proposing recommendations for the improvement of the current system.

Interparliamentary Committee meeting on the Smart Borders Package

Smart borders

On 23 and 24 February 2015 in room József Antall (JAN) 6Q2, LIBE Committee together with the Directorate for Relations with National Parliaments will hold an Interparliamentary Committee meeting on the Smart Borders Package: European challenges, national experiences,the way ahead.

The meeting is intended to serve as a forum for an exchange of views and information among national and European parliamentarians on the Commission's legislative proposals on the Entry/ExitSystem (COM(2013)95) and the Registered Traveller Programme (COM(2013)97). The input of national parliaments is sought against the background of very diverging national situations (as regards their geographical location, the types of borders, the travel flows etc.) and experiences (as regards, for example, the use of national entry/exit systems or types of registered traveller programmes).

The meeting will be webstreamed.

LIBE mission to Frontex, Warsaw, 16-17 February 2015

On 16 and 17 February LIBE Committee sent a mission to visit the Frontex agency in Warsaw, Poland, which deals with the management of the external borders of the Union. The purpose of the mission was to discuss all issues related to the management of the agency, budget control, fundamental rights and recent developments, including the Triton operation in the Mediterranean and the role of Frontex in Eurosur.

Debate in Plenary on the situation in the Mediterranean

More than 100.000 irregular migrants cross the Mediterranean every year, but many of them die on the attempt.

On Wednesday 11 February, the Plenary debated with the Council and the Commission on the role of the Frontex and EASO Agencies in tackling the situation in the Mediterranean, and on how their role can be improved and/or enhanced.
