The digitalisation of medicine allows the comparison of disease progression or treatment responses from patients worldwide. However, digitalisation is going on in each sector of the economy and it has been put at the core of the EU activities, particularly through the Digital Single Market Strategy (DSM) (COM (2015) 192 final), which is one of European Commission’s 10 priorities.

This strategy aims to open up digital opportunities for people and business and enhance Europe's position as a world leader in the digital economy and society.

Recently, the progress made in the implementation of the DSM was assessed and new initiatives were proposed. The DSM proposals aim to ensure that the digitisation in health and care will benefit EU citizens (providing them with better treatment, prevention and early diagnosis of diseases) and deliver more sustainable health and care systems across the Union.
