Third meeting of the working group on Digital Single Market

On 26 May, the Working Group on the Digital Single Market (DSM) will hold his third meeting and will focus on the European Commission Strategy on the DSM. Created in 2011, the Working group on DSM led to the adoption of a number of parliamentary resolutions and has become a key platform for in-depth discussion where EP Members, EC, stakeholders and experts exchange views, identify new opportunities/challenges, remaining barriers and propose concrete measures to make the DSM in the EU a reality.

On 6 May, IMCO hold an exchange of views with J. Katainen, Vice-President for Jobs, Growth, Investment and Competitiveness, and with E. Bieńkowska, Commissioner responsible for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs. The purpose of the exchange of views was to discuss the progress of the Commission work programme and the upcoming initiatives. On 7 May, Commissioner for Digital Economy & Society G. Oettinger, presented the Commission strategy on Digital Single Market.

EEA-Switzerland: obstacles with regard to the full implementation of the internal market

The hearing started with opening remarks by Vice-Chair Corazza Bildt, Chairman of the SINEEA Delegation Jorn Dohrmann and the Rapporteur Andreas Schwab. Four speakers were invited.
Ambassador of the Swiss mission to the EU Roberto Balzaretti highlighted the close ties that exist between the EU and Switzerland which are based on common values. In addition, Switzerland is an important trading partner of the EU (4th with regard to goods, 2nd with regard to services).
Ambassador Bergidis Ellertsdottir of the Icelandic missionto the EU took the floor on behalf of the three EEA EFTA states (Norway,Iceland, Liechtenstein). She stated that special efforts are being made inorder to reduce the current implementation deficit in which is substantiallyhigher in comparison to the EU28 and welcomed the wording used in IMCO's draftReport stating that the EEA Agreement "has proven to be a solid,efficient and well-functioning agreement ensuring the integrity of the SingleMarket".
Prof Dr. Christa Tobler presented an overview of the EU's institutional arrangements with the EEA EFTA States and with Switzerland. She underlined that the Swiss context was different as only three of the fundamental freedoms apply. The EEA EFTA States are much more integrated in the internal market.
Ms Kirstin Schneider, DG GROW Director, underlined theimportance of homogenous implementation of the acquis. She expanded on thecurrent implementation deficit of the EEA EFTA States which needs to beimproved as it is well above the 1% target (2,9% for Iceland). The initiativesset up by the countries concerned to speed up transposition and facilitate implementation are therefore very welcome.

Deployment of the eCall in-vehicle systems

The legislative report on Deployment of the eCall in-vehicle system was voted on 28 April in Plenary. To help mitigate the consequences of serious road accidents, the EU has committed to putting in place an emergency call system. The eCall will dial 112 - the Europe's single emergency number and communicate the vehicle's location to emergency services, even if the driver is unconscious or unable to make a phone call. It could save up to 2500 lives a year.

Digital single market – committee chairs welcome proposal

The proposed Digital Single Market strategy is needed to build trust in the online world, boost growth and protect the rights of citizens, creators and companies. These were among the first reactions from the chairs of the three committees that will work intensively on today's Commission proposal. This afternoon and tomorrow morning, the Commissioners responsible will visit Parliament to discuss the proposal with MEPs. (Lue lisää)


Package holiday protection: MEPs strike a deal with Council

Travellers putting together their own package holidays online will get the same protection as those buying from traditional travel agents under a provisional deal struck by MEPs and Council negotiators on Tuesday. The deal also strengthens holidaymakers’ rights, by enabling them to cancel a package deal contract if its price rises by more than 8%, get help if they encounter difficulties or get transport home if a tour operator goes bust. Gas ovens need EU safety rules, but oven gloves do not, say MEPs

Carbon monoxide can kill, so gas ovens should be professionally installed and maintained. But oven gloves need not be subject to EU safety rules unless they are labelled “protective”, said Internal Market Committee MEPs voting on draft EU rules on Thursday. (Lue lisää)
