On 27April at 19.00, the ENVI Committee will hold an EoV with Miguel Arias Cañete,Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, which will focus on the Commission's climate action priorities, as regards the implementation of the2015 Commission Work Programme and looking ahead to 2016. Key topics for the ENVI Committee include the implementation of the 2030 climate and energy framework, the international climate negotiations and the climate and decarbonisation aspects of the EU energy union. The meeting will be webstreamed.

Stop Vivisection: European Citizens' Initiative public hearing

A public hearing on the Stop Vivisection European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) will be hosted by the European Parliament in order to provide a platform for debate for Members, the general public, the ECI's supporters and experts in the field. The ECI aims to repeal the Directive on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes and asks the European Commission to present a new proposal that does away with animal experimentation.
The hearing is organised by the AGRI committee in association with the ENVI, ITRE and PETI committees. It will be held in Brussels on 11.05.15 from 15h00 to 18h30, in room JAN 4Q2.

Workshop - Organ harvesting in China

On 21 April, a workshop on the issue of human organ harvesting was held for the ENVI Committee. The debates focused on, amongst others: the European model of legislation on organ donation and transplantation; donation, transplantation and transplantation abuse on the international level; trafficking in organs and human trafficking for organs; and ways of attaining a global framework for ethical donation and use.

Joint AGRI/ENVI meeting: Cloning of animals for farming purposes

The AGRI and ENVI committees jointly debated the draft report on animal cloning for farming purposes prepared by Giulia Moi (AGRI rapporteur,EFDD, IT) and Renate Sommer (ENVI rapporteur, EPP, DE). The Commission proposal aims to suspend the use of the cloning technique in the EU for farm animals,the placing on the market of live animal clones and embryo clones and (in an accompanying proposal for a Council Directive) the marketing of food, such as meat and milk, from animal clones. The co-rapporteurs suggest to also prohibit the import and the placing on the market of the descendants of animal clones,and of the reproductive material and of the food coming from animal clones and their descendants and would like to extend the scope to all species of farmed animals (16 April at 11.00 room JAN 4Q2).

Health MEPs propose blueprint for safer healthcare

Suggested measures to improve patient safety, inter alia by tackling growing resistance to human and veterinary antibiotics by using existing treatments more responsibly and promoting innovation, are set out in a Health Committee resolution voted on Tuesday. MEPs note that between 8 and 12% of patients admitted to hospitals in the EU suffer adverse events such as healthcare-related infections, which place a heavy burden on limited health service budgets. Environment committee backs compromise on cleaner biofuels

MEPs and ministers moved a step closer on Tuesday to an agreement on plans to cap the production of traditional biofuels and accelerate the shift to alternative sources, such as certain types of waste and residues and new sources such as seaweed, with the environment committee's vote backing a deal struck by legislators. The plan aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions caused by the growing use of farm land for biofuel crops. (Lue lisää)
