International women's day

The Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality will hold an inter-parliamentary committee meeting on empowering women and girls through education to discuss challenges, opportunities and steps ahead at the EU level. Taking place on 05.03.15, the meeting will focus on ways of eliminating gender disparity in education and training, and on challenges for equal access to continuous and quality education. The EP Press Service will also hold a seminar for journalists on this topic on 04.03.15.

FEMM Women domestic workers and carers

The Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality held a hearing on the situation of women domestic workers and carers in the EU, in view of its forthcoming non-legislative report on the issue. The main topics of debate included: women's working conditions in the EU, namely in the home care sector; women migrants' domestic work and consequences on welfare, career and family relationships; and the ILO Domestic Workers Convention, amongst others.

GMAs on a Union system for supply chain due diligence self-certification and on Green growth opportunities - 26.02.15

On 26 February FEMM adopted several gender mainstreaming amendments proposed on the "Union system for supply chain due diligence self-certification of responsible importers of tin, tantalum and tungsten, their ores, and gold originating in conflict-affected and high-risk areas" (INTA Committee) and "Green growth opportunities for SMEs" (ITRE Committee).

Ebola crisis: vote - 26.02.15

Members adopted the opinion on the report of the DEVE Committee on the Ebola crisis. Given the appallingly high percentages of women affected by the Ebola virus disease, the Rapporteur Ms Teresa Jimenez-Becerril Barrio highlights the importance of gender-balanced health specialist teams and sex-disaggregated data. In her opinion, she draws attention to the negative effect of disintegrating health systems on maternal health and stresses that women can play a key role in protecting their families and break chains of transmissions. The opinion has been adopted by 21 votes in favour, 4 against and 0 abstentions.

Family Business in Europe: vote – 26.02.15

The FEMM committee adopted the opinion to the ITRE report on Family Business in Europe. Ms Daniela Aiuto is the Rapporteur. The opinion has been adopted by 21 votes in favour, 3 against and 3 abstentions.
