Le Parlement européen est l'un des grands acteurs de la scène politique européenne et la commission des affaires économiques et monétaires (ECON) est aux avant-postes de l'activité du Parlement. Elle est chargée de dossiers tels que les politiques économique et monétaire de l'Union européenne, la fiscalité et la concurrence, la liberté de circulation des capitaux et la réglementation des services financiers (banques, sociétés d'assurance, fonds de pension, gestion d'actifs/de placements, comptabilité, système monétaire et financier international, etc.). En outre, la plus large part des travaux du Parlement étant conduits dans les commissions, c'est à la commission ECON qu'incombe l'essentiel du travail parlementaire sur ces thèmes économiques et monétaires majeurs. Aussi la commission ECON est-elle au cœur de l'action du Parlement face à la crise économique et financière actuelle et exerce-t-elle une forte influence sur les politiques à mener dans l'Union européenne et à l'échelle internationale.
 
Au chapitre de la politique monétaire de l'Union ainsi que du fonctionnement de l'UEM et du système monétaire européen, la règle selon laquelle la Banque centrale européenne est tenue de rendre des comptes au Parlement est primordiale, car elle assure un notable contrepoids à l'indépendance de la banque centrale.
 
La commission ECON contribue dans une large mesure à l'élaboration de la législation européenne, puisque le Parlement est, avec le Conseil, colégislateur dans la plupart des champs d'action de l'Union européenne. Le droit de l'Union détermine souvent les lois et les règlementations des États membres, notamment dans le domaine des services financiers et, depuis l'entrée en vigueur du traité de Lisbonne, sous l'aspect de la gouvernance économique de l'Union. Les députés membres de la commission ECON sont ainsi en mesure d'imposer leur marque sur le droit de l'Union dans ces importants domaines de la politique européenne.
