On Thursday, 5 March DEVE Rapporteur Nirj Deva (ECR, UK) will chair a workshop with experts and stakeholders to prepare his report on "Private sector and development".
The report will contribute to the operationalising the new policy framework initiated by the Commission Communication on "A Stronger Role of the Private Sector in Achieving Inclusive and Sustainable Growth in Developing Countries". The workshop on 5 March (10:00-12:30 UCT) includes two panels, the first panel looking at the partnership models to support the private sector in developing countries while the second will focus on the principles of engagement for the private sector.

In preparation of a report on 'Tax avoidance and tax evasion as challenges for governance, social protection and development in developing countries' by MEP Elly Schlein (S&D, IT), the Committee on Development holds a workshop with experts and stakeholders on Monday, 2 March (16.00-19.00 UCT).

The meeting started with taking stock of the humanitarian crisis resulting from the conflict in Eastern Ukraine. The Committee then welcomed the Executive Director of the World Food Programme, Ms Ertharin Cousin, and EU Commissioner Stylianides to discuss ways of eradicating hunger and improving nutrition for a growing global population. On Tuesday, key topics were financing for development post-2015, EU legislation on conflict minerals as well as a vote on the Committee's TTIP Opinion.
Public Hearing 24 February: Financing for Development Post-2015. A Defining Debate
On Tuesday, 24 February the Committee on Development is scheduled to hold a public hearing, preparing a report which looks into the question how to increase and best use all available types of financial resources for sustainable global development and poverty eradication over the next 15 years.
In September 2015, UN Member States are set to adopt new 'Sustainable Development Goals', replacing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), agreed in 2000. An important stepping-stone in the run-up to the UN summit on the future "Sustainable Development Goals" will be a high-level international conference on Financing for Development, in Addis Ababa on 13-16 July.
The hearing and the forthcoming report by DEVE Member Pedro Silva Pereira are meant to feed into preparations of the Addis Financing for Development (FfD) conference. EU Development Commissioner Neven Mimica, UN agencies, representatives of business and civil society organisations will provide their perspectives in the DEVE hearing which is scheduled for Tuesday 24 February afternoon (15:30-18:30) and will be live web-streamed.
UN Deputy Secretary General Eliasson exchanges with MEPs
On Monday 2 February, the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) and DEVE held a joint exchange of views with UN Deputy-Secretary-General Jan Eliasson.
Among other tasks, the UNDSG supports the Secretary-General in profiling the UN's role in the economic and social spheres, including its efforts in development policy and development assistance.
Prior to his appointment as Deputy Secretary-General, Jan Eliasson also served as a member of the UN Secretary-General's Advocacy Group of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Concern about the lack of tangible progress in TTIP talks were voiced by International trade MEPs who on Tuesday debated their draft recommendations for the TTIP negotiators. Lively discussion concerned the investor-to-state dispute-settlement clause, dubbed unnecessary by the chair, Bernd Lange (DE, S&D). Meanwhile, the development committee adopted an opinion stressing the impact of TTIP on developing countries and calling for the deal to have an explicit reference to development policy.
