The ENVI Committee held an exchange of views with Maroš Šefčovič, Vice-President of the Commission, on the Energy Union Strategy in the context of Commission Work Programme 2015 and the priorities for 2016 as part of the structured dialogue. Key topics for the ENVI Committee include the implementation of the 2030 climate and energy framework, the international climate negotiations and the climate and decarbonisation aspects of the EU energy union.
EU countries would have to enforce sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emission limits upon medium-sized combustion plants, such as electricity generators or heating systems for domestic, residential or industrial use, under draft plans approved by the Environment Committee on Wednesday. MEPs voted to adapt the scheme to match the plants’ thermal input, so as to reduce the administrative burden on small businesses. (Tovább)
A draft law to reform the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), by reducing the surplus of carbon credits available for trading into order to support the price, was informally agreed upon by MEPs and the Latvian Presidency of the EU Council of Ministers on Tuesday. The surplus reserve would start operating in 2019. (Tovább)

The fight against climate change is at the core of the committee's work. It will be high on the agenda early in this legislature, in view of upcoming climate summits which will be critical for the adoption of an international climate agreement, expected in 2015. The cultivation of GMOs and their possible restriction or prohibition in Member States will be another area of focus at the outset of this parliamentary term.
