Una commissione può organizzare un'audizione di esperti, ove ciò sia ritenuto essenziale ai fini del proprio lavoro su un determinato tema. Le audizioni possono anche essere tenute congiuntamente da due o più commissioni. La maggior parte delle commissioni organizza audizioni regolarmente in quanto consentono di consultare esperti e discutere temi fondamentali. On 21 March 2019, the PETI and ENVI Committees will hold a joint Public Hearing on “Climate Change Denial.” The aim of the hearing is to explore the topic of climate change denial under different perspectives and to examine the communication techniques used in politics or by private companies and other actors in society to mislead the public on the negative impact of certain industrial activities or policies on the climate. Parties to the Paris Agreement are invited to communicate, by 2020, their mid-century, long-term low GHG emission development strategies. The Energy Governance Union Regulation also provides that the Commission adopts a proposal for a Union long-term strategy for greenhouse gas emissions reduction in accordance with the Paris Agreement which includes a scenario on achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions within the Union by 2050 and negative emissions thereafter. It is widely accepted that new crop varieties need to be developed to meet challenges such as climate change and the spread of plant diseases and an increasing number of plant breeding companies are already actively using NBTs. On 22 March, PETI and ENVI held a joint public hearing on the impact of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) on public health and the environment, due to the high number of petitions received on the topic. Members listened to experts from EU and national regulatory agencies, academia, and civil society. The hearing consisted of two panels, focusing on the specificities of the EU regulatory approval process for EDCs, and whether it could be conceived differently in the future. (Seguito)

On 11 October, a joint ENVI/AGRI public hearing was held on "The Monsanto papers and glyphosate”. Glyphosate is a widely used, but highly controversial plant protection product and the active substance in Monsanto's weed killer Roundup. EFSA and ECHA concluded that glyphosate is safe, while the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified it as “probably carcinogenic to humans”. (Seguito)
