The meetings of the Subcommittee on Security and Defence are open to the public. However, for security reasons, participants must obtain an access pass in advance. Requests for access passes must be sent 3 working days before the start of the meeting to sede-secretariat@europarl.europa.eu

Mali: MEPs back financial commitment for reconstruction and democracy

MEPs welcomed the results of the Mali donors conference but insisted on respect for the rule of law and human rights during their discussion on Thursday with the acting president, Dioncounda Traoré. Members of the security and defence, foreign affairs and development committees also stressed the need to establish genuine democracy and decentralisation.

„Nuo pat pradžių, kai 1999 m. buvo parengta bendra saugumo ir gynybos politika (BSGP), Europos Sąjungai atsirado galimybė parodyti savo gebėjimus veikti veiksmingai ir naudingai pasaulyje. Sąjunga surengė daugiau nei dvidešimt civilinių ir karinių misijų ir taip prisidėjo prie stabilumo ir taikos palaikymo Balkanuose, Pietų Kaukaze, Afrikoje, Artimuosiuose Rytuose ir Azijoje.
 
Tačiau tam, kad kokios nors krypties ES politika būtų visiškai pagrįsta, t. y. suprantama, priimtina valstybių narių piliečiams ir net jų pageidaujama, būtina, kad Europos Parlamentas dalyvautų priimant sprendimus.
 
Mano įsitikinimu, Saugumo ir gynybos pakomitečio vaidmuo – būtent nagrinėti BSGP raidą instituciniu, pajėgumų ir veiklos aspektais ir užtikrinti, kad saugumo ir gynybos klausimai nebūtų svarstomi vien tik per ekspertų diskusijas, bet kad juos svarstant būtų reaguojama ir į ES piliečių rūpimus klausimus“.
