Europos Parlamentas nustato Europos politinės darbotvarkės gaires, o Ekonomikos ir pinigų politikos komitetas (ECON) atlieka pagrindinį vaidmenį Parlamento veikloje. Jis atsako už tokias sritis, kaip ES ekonomikos ir pinigų politika, mokesčių ir konkurencijos politika, laisvas kapitalo judėjimas, bei reglamentuoja finansinių paslaugų (bankų, draudimo bendrovių, pensinių fondų, turto ir kapitalo valdymo, apskaitos, tarptautinės pinigų ir finansų sistemos ir kt.) sritis. Kadangi pagrindinis Parlamento darbas vyksta komitetuose, tai būtent ECON komitetas atlieka didžiausią Parlamento darbą svarbiausiose ekonomikos ir pinigų politikos srityse. Todėl ECON komitetui tenka pagrindinis vaidmuo Parlamento veikloje, susijusioje su dabartine ekonomikos ir finansų krize, ir šis komitetas svariai įtakoja politinę darbotvarkę tiek ES, tiek tarptautiniu lygmeniu.
 
Sąjungos pinigų politikos, EPS ir Europos pinigų sistemos atžvilgiu ECB atskaitomybė Parlamentui yra labai reikšminga, nes ji yra svarbi atsvara centrinio banko nepriklausomumui.
 
ECON komitetas atlieka pagrindinį vaidmenį ES teisės aktų rengimo srityje, nes Parlamentas kartu su Taryba rengia daugelį ES politikos sričių reguliuojančius teisės aktus. ES teisė dažnai nulemia valstybių narių nacionalinius įstatymus ir kitus teisės aktus, ypač reguliuojančius finansų paslaugas, o nuo Lisabonos sutarties įsigaliojimo - ir ES teisės aktus ekonomikos valdysenos srityje. Tai suteikia ECON komiteto nariams galimybę formuoti ES teisę šiose svarbiose ES politikos srityse.
