Next Meetings of the Committee on Petitions

The next PETI meetings will take place in Brussels on:
 
- Wednesday 19 June 2013, 9h00 - 12h30
- Wednesday 19 June 2013, 15h00 - 18h30
 
The meetings will take place in room P4B001 of the Paul Henri-Spaak (PHS) building and will be web-streamed on the European Parliament´s website.

Water fluoridation (UK), Air-pollution (BG), Reports from Spain´s FFV on PETI Agenda

On June 19 -- from 9h00 to 12h30 and 15h00 to 18h30 -- the Committee on Petitions reconvened in Brussels to consider petitions, Reports, Opinions and many other concerns of the European citizen.
 
Key-issues considered have featured:
  • impact of decades of water fluoridation and effects on health in Ireland & UK;
  • excessive levels of air-pollution in Bulgaria;
  • Debate on the Ley de Costas Report from the Fact-Finding Visit (FFV) to Madrid.

The next EU Ombudsman? Follow PETI´s special hearing to discover the candidates

PETI´s special hearing is a moment in the process leading to the election of the next European Ombudsman.
 
June 18 -- from 9h00 to 12h30 and 15h00 to 18h30 -- PETI, along with its Chair, Coordinators and Members, fostered the debate.
 
With its round of candid questions open to all Members of the European Parliament and the chance it offered the candidates to lay their programs before the European citizen; the Hearing proved challenging and engaging, much like everything else PETI-related.
 
The whole day was web-streamed and every citizen is strongly encouraged to browse on and tune in.

PETI prepares European Parliament's Plenary to elect European Ombudsman in July 2013

Relevant procedures have been launched for the election of the new European Ombudsman, following the decision of Mr. Diamandouros to retire.
 
In close cooperation with the office of the President Mr. Martin Schulz, and other services responsible, PETI set in motion the process which includes:
  • organising a special EP hearing open to all members to get to know the candidates and their objectives for the Office;
  • leading to the election of the new European Ombudsman during the Plenary session of July 2013.

Election of the new EU Ombudsman: Members hear candidates
PETI 18-06-2013 - 18:09  

Members asked the six candidates for the post of European Ombudsman what they could offer by way of independence, visibility and transparency, in a series of public hearings held by the Petitions Committee on Tuesday. The new Ombudsman will be elected by the full Parliament in July.

Laipni lūdzam Lūgumrakstu komitejas tīmekļa vietnē, kur atradīsiet informāciju par komitejas darbu un rīkotajiem pasākumiem. Šo komiteju es vadu kopš 2009. gada.
 
Līgumā par Eiropas Savienību noteiktās tiesības iesniegt lūgumrakstu ir pamattiesības, kas cieši saistītas ar pilsoniskumu. Tiesības iesniegt lūgumrakstu ir nozīmīgs un bieži vien iedarbīgs veids, kā cilvēkiem tieši iesaistīties Parlamenta darbībā un izklāstīt savas problēmas, iesniegt priekšlikumus vai sūdzības, kuru izskatīšanai pievēršas komitejas locekļi.
 
Komitejas locekļi pastāvīgi iesaistās ES iedzīvotāju iesniegto lūgumrakstu izskatīšanā, iedziļinoties problēmās, kas saistītas ar Līgumā noteikto iedzīvotāju tiesību iespējamiem pārkāpumiem, un, sadarbojoties ar valsts, reģionālām un vietējām iestādēm, risina jautājumus par Eiropas tiesību aktu piemērošanu tādās jomās kā vide, sociālās lietas, pārvietošanās brīvība utt.
 
Lūgumrakstu komiteja ir nevis likumdevēja komiteja, bet gan komiteja, kas veic izmeklēšanas darbības. Tā cenšas panākt, lai iedzīvotājiem būtu iespēja izmantot ārpustiesas aizsardzības līdzekļus, ja viņu sūdzības ir pamatotas. Komiteja var organizēt faktu vākšanas misijas un ziņot par konstatētajiem faktiem plenārsēdē.
 
Lūgumrakstu komitejai ir svarīga loma, nodrošinot saikni ar Eiropas iedzīvotājiem un pastiprinot ES lēmumu pieņemšanas procesu demokrātisko leģitimitāti un atbildību par tiem.
