On 3 September the Committee on Budgets will exchange views on the Council's reading on the EU's 2016 budget on the basis of a Working Document prepared by the General Rapporteur, Mr José Manuel Fernandes. This kicks off one month of intense consideration of next year's budget within the European Parliament which will culminate with the Committee's vote on 28-29-30 September, followed by the adoption of Parliament's reading in plenary on 28 October.

On 15 September Ms Kristalina Georgieva, Vice-President of the European Commission, will visit the Budgets and Budgetary Control Committees to discuss performance-based budgeting. The aim is to arrive at an EU budget focused on results and based on a stronger performance culture. The discussion will also feed into preparations for the establishment of an interinstitutional Working Group on the same topic composed of representatives of the Parliament, Commission, Council and Court of Auditors.

Situation in the Mediterranean and need for holistic EU approach to migration

On 3 September, the Committee on Budgets will vote its opinion on the situation in the Mediterranean and the need for a holistic EU approach to migration. The draft opinion was prepared under the rapporteurship of Mr Gérard Deprez (ALDE) and recommends, inter alia, that sufficient funding be provided in the 2016 budget for this issue. 26 amendments have been put forward.

Financial support for reintegration of laid-off workers of Ford/Genk and Opel/Bochum

The Committee on Budgets will exchange views on two proposals to mobilise the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund. At stake is financial support for the reintegration into the labour market of some 4500 workers made redundant in Ford Genk, Belgium, and 11 of its suppliers and downstream producers (EUR 6,3 million), as well as 2881 workers of an Opel plant in Bochum, Germany, and 1 of its supplier (EUR 7 million). The vote will take place on 14-15.09.2015.

Joint BUDG/LIBE mission to Sicily

Members from the BUDG and LIBE committees travelled to Sicily from 22 to 24 July to study and discuss how to address the migratory pressures that the region is facing from a budgetary perspective. The delegation visited migrant centres, met with government officials, representatives from FRONTEX and EASO as well as representatives of relevant NGOs and obtained a deeper understanding of the issues at stake.
