In-depth analysis for the ENVI Committee

This study reviews and updates the previous 2013 report onFood safety policies and regulation in the United States. In particular thereview considers the basic relevant legislative acts and the organisation ofvarious branches of government, key changes in approach or implementation havealso been identified. In addition, a list of the legislative requirementsrelated to food safety in relation to the Transatlantic Trade and InvestmentPartnership (TTIP) is presented. A brief description is also given of currentfood safety emergencies in the United States.

This document was provided by Policy Department A for theCommittee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) in view ofthe ENVI delegation to Washington from 16-19 March 2015.

On 6 May, the ENVI Committee will consider the draft report "Reduction of pollutant emission from road vehicles" by Albert Deß. In the context of improving the EU's air quality and addressing the Better Regulation Agenda, the Commission proposal focuses on emission calculations and on alignment with post-Lisbon comitology procedures.

Medium combustion plants - Vote

On 6 May, the ENVI Committee will vote on the draft report "Limitation of emissions of certain pollutants into the air from medium combustion plants". The Commission proposal aims at setting out emission limit values for medium combustion plants in order to improve the quality of air in the European Union.

Follow up to the European Citizens' Initiative Right2Water

Right to water hearing

On 6 May, the Committee will consider the draft report "Follow up to the European Citizen's Initiative Right2Water". In 2014, the ENVI Committee organised the first public hearing of a successful European Citizen's Initiative, which generated widespread public interest across many Member States and whose objectives focused on global access to water and sanitation and no liberalisation of water services.

ETS market stability reserve: MEPs strike deal with Council

A draft law to reform the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), by reducing the surplus of carbon credits available for trading into order to support the price, was informally agreed upon by MEPs and the Latvian Presidency of the EU Council of Ministers on Tuesday. Health MEPs propose blueprint for safer healthcare

Suggested measures to improve patient safety, inter alia by tackling growing resistance to human and veterinary antibiotics by using existing treatments more responsibly and promoting innovation, are set out in a Health Committee resolution voted on Tuesday. MEPs note that between 8 and 12% of patients admitted to hospitals in the EU suffer adverse events such as healthcare-related infections, which place a heavy burden on limited health service budgets. Environment committee backs compromise on cleaner biofuels

MEPs and ministers moved a step closer on Tuesday to an agreement on plans to cap the production of traditional biofuels and accelerate the shift to alternative sources, such as certain types of waste and residues and new sources such as seaweed, with the environment committee's vote backing a deal struck by legislators. The plan aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions caused by the growing use of farm land for biofuel crops. (Aqra iktar dwar dan)
