The next INTA meeting

The next meeting of the Committee on International Trade will take place in Brussels on Monday, 13 April 2015 (from 15:00 to 18:30), Room JAN 6Q2 and on Tuesday, 14 April 2015 (from 09:00 to 18:30), Room ASP 3G-3.

INTA Committee ad-hoc delegation to Vietnam

A high-level delegation of the International Committee will pay a visit to Vietnam from 6 to 10 April in order to engage with institutional, political and civil society representatives on the ongoing EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement.

The visit will be held just two weeks after the crucial 12th round of trade negotiations and will aim at following up the EP requests listed in the resolution adopted in April 2014.

Chaired by Mr Bernd Lange, the delegation will be composed of 7 others Members: Jan Zahradil (who is also theStanding Rapporteur on Vietnam), Iuliu Winkler, Daniel Caspary, David Martin,Marielle De Sarnez, Franck Proust and Inmaculada Rodriguez-Pinero Fernandez. Members will travel to Hanoi, the political capital of the country, and to HoChi Minh City where significant EU businesses are located.

Exchange of views with Jyrki Katainen, Vice-President of the European Commission on 13 April 2015

INTA will be hosting for its first time Vice President Jyrki Katainen to exchange ideas on how to create synergies between the agenda for "Jobs, Growth, Investment and Competitiveness", the Investment Plan, the review of Europe 2020 Strategy and the EU's trade and investment policy so that the EU can provide its workers and companies with the best tools to defend their values and interests in a challenging world and contribute to innovation and wellbeing in the EU and beyond.

Exchange of views with Ambassador of the People's Republic of China, Mme YANG Yanyi on 14 April 2015

Ambassador of the People's Republic of China, Mme YANG Yanyi will exchange views with INTA Members. China is the EU's second biggest trading partner and the EU is China's biggest partner. The two giants trade over 1billion euros every day of the year. The EU has a significant trade deficit with China, but at the same time China has been for years the fastest growing market to the EU's exports. The EU and China are currently negotiating a comprehensive investment agreement for better protection and market access. INTA Standing Rapporteur for China is Iuliu WINKLER (EPP).

INTA will vote on the following files:

- Report on"Conflict minerals" (Rapporteur: Iuliu Winkler, PPE). Members will vote the 627 amendments to the legislative proposal of the Commission to promote responsible sourcing of minerals from conflict areas in an attempt to break the link between mineral extraction and conflict. The vote could be a close one.

- Draft Opinion to the ITRE report on "European Energy Security". 83 amendments were tabled to this topical and important opinion. Whilst Members agree that trade is an important tool in the EU's energy security strategy, opinions differ e.g. on the scope of energy security, and as to which extent the Union should join its efforts when  negotiating energy agreements with third countries. INTA Rapporteur for the opinion is Helmut SCHOLZ (GUE).

What's in the TTIP for Europeans? Hearing and debate with Commissioner Malmström

International Trade Committee MEPs will focus on Investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) and investment protection rules under the proposed Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) in a debate with trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström on Wednesday, starting at 15:00. They will then hold a public hearing on the TTIP’s potential benefits. (Aqra iktar dwar dan)
