Boris Tarasyuk, the Ukrainian government's special envoy for Crimea, told the foreign affairs committee on Monday that Ukraine needed the EU to sign the association agreement as quickly as possible. He called Russia's action "both intervention and aggression" and voiced his gratitude for MEPs' solidarity.
Foreign affairs MEPs express deep concern at the recent developments in Turkey concerning allegations of high-level corruption and stress that constitutional reform must remain the top priority for the modernisation and democratisation of Turkey, in a resolution passed on Monday on Turkey's progress in 2013 towards EU accession.
An official delegation of twelve MEPs is travelling to Kyiv on Saturday afternoon to meet with counterparts in the Ukrainian parliament (Verkhovna Rada) and discuss future assistance. The delegation, which went to Ukraine at the end of January as well, will stay for two days.
Foreign affairs MEPs will debate yesterday’s Foreign Affairs Council with the EU foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, at 15.00. The political crisis in Ukraine, EU military operation in the Central African Republic amidst escalating violence and the forthcoming negotiations with Cuba topped the Council agenda. MEPs are also expected to raise the situation in the southern neighbourhood and in Syria.
