DROI Committee Meetings

The next DROI meeting will be held on Monday, 27 May, from 15h00 to 18h30 and on Tuesday, 28 May, from 9 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and 15h30 to 19h00 in meeting room ASP - 3E-2.
 
The meetings of the Subcommittee on Human Rights are open to the public.  However, for security reasons, participants must obtain an access badge in advance. Requests for access passes must be sent 3 working days before the start of the meeting to droi-secretariat@europarl.europa.eu

Human rights situation in Russia

An exchange of views on the human rights situation in Russia will take place on 28 May in the afternoon. There will be two main topics for discussion: the fate of political prisoners, including the Khodorkovsky case and a review of the new restrictions put on the activities of Russian civil society organisations.

   
Yemen human rights  
Exchange of views with EU Ambassador to Yemen, Bettina Muscheidt

On Tuesday, 28 May in the morning, Ms Bettina Muscheidt, the EU Ambassador to Yemen will update members on the human rights situation in Yemen, in particular on the release of the political detainees, women's rights, children's rights, the death penalty and the prospect of national dialogue in Yemen.

On 28 May in the morning DROI will consider the amendments tabled to the draft report on the European Parliament recommendation to the Council on the draft EU Guidelines on the Promotion and Protection of Freedom of Religion or Belief

Damas de Blanco receive their Sakharov Prize at the European Parliament

The Cuban "Ladies in White" (Damas de Blanco) protest movement was at last able to receive its European Parliament Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in Brussels on Tuesday, when, over seven years later, Havana finally lifted a travel ban. The prize was presented at a special ceremony during a joint meeting of the foreign affairs, development and human rights committees, attended by European Parliament President, Martin Schulz.

A Subcomissão dos Direitos do Homem é uma subcomissão da Comissão dos Assuntos Externos. A descrição das suas competências figura no n.º 5 das atribuições da Comissão AFET:
 
   "problemas relacionados com os direitos do Homem, a protecção das minorias e a promoção dos valores democráticos nos países terceiros. Neste contexto, a comissão será assistida por uma Subcomissão dos Direitos do Homem. Sem prejuízo das disposições relevantes, os deputados de outras comissões e órgãos com responsabilidade na matéria serão convidados a assistir às reuniões da subcomissão."

Chair of Subcommittee on Human Rights  
 

Bem-vindos à página Web da Subcomissão dos Direitos do Homem do Parlamento Europeu que, desde a sua reconstituição em 2004, se tornou uma plataforma importante para a defesa dos direitos humanos à escala mundial.
 
A Subcomissão, também designada DROI, organiza audições e debates sobre todo o tipo de questões envolvendo os direitos humanos. Aprovamos relatórios e resoluções, emergentes destas discussões, contribuindo assim para o debate internacional sobre temas como a pena de morte, a tortura e a luta contra a impunidade. De igual modo, tentamos reagir a violações dos direitos humanos em todo o mundo da forma mais eficaz possível, dando voz aos mais afetados.
 
O relatório anual sobre os direitos humanos, que identifica a situação dos direitos humanos a nível mundial, é também elaborado pela Subcomissão DROI. Outro ponto alto do nosso trabalho é o Prémio Sakharov para a Liberdade de Pensamento, atribuído anualmente, em dezembro, a indivíduos ou a organizações que lutam pelos direitos humanos e direitos fundamentais. Em 2013, celebraremos o seu 25.º aniversário.
 
As nossas reuniões podem ser seguidas em linha e os nossos documentos podem ser descarregados. Dar acesso aos nossos trabalhos é vital, uma vez que apreciamos as contribuições e as informações atualizadas de defensores dos direitos humanos, cidadãos e ONG.
