FEMM Committee will organize a hearing on this issue in order to examine the reasons why women are under-represented at higher hierarchical levels in the research field, even in sectors where they represent a majority - educational sector. The event will serve as additional input for the work of the rapporteur Ms Vozemberg on her report. The invited experts will present their views on how to tackle the problem and the EC will present ongoing initiatives in the field. The interventions will be followed by a debate with the FEMM Members.

Zero tolerance for FGM: adoption of an oral question

International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation

Following the Commission Communication "Towards the elimination of female genital mutilation" of November 2013, the FEMM Committee wants to draw attention to this cruel form of violence against women and girls. Members adopted on an oral question on this issue during its meeting of 20.01.2015, asking the Commission to provide information on the state of play of the implementation of its action plan. The oral question was adopted by 28 votes in favour, 1 vote against and 1 abstention.

Visit of Commissioner Vera JOUROVÁ

Commissioner Vera JOUROVÁ visited for the first time the FEMM Committee after her formal entry into office. Her statement and the subsequent debate gave Members the opportunity to line out the priorities of the Commission and to sum up the state of play on some relevant files, such as the maternity leave directive, women on boards or violence against women.

European Platform on undeclared work – vote

In order to enhance cooperation in the prevention and deterrence of undeclared work the EC submitted on 9 April 2014 a proposal for a Decision of the European Parliament and of the Council on establishing a European platform. The EP, in its resolution on effective labour inspections as a strategy to improve working conditions in Europe, welcomed the initiative to create a European Platform. The opinion has been adopted by 29 votes in favour and 4 votes against.

Council Presidency’s programme by Mr Uldis AUGULIS - presentation

The exchange of views took place in the context of the traditional presentation by the incoming Presidency of its priorities and programme in the FEMM Committee's area of responsibility. Mr Uldis AUGULIS is Minister of Welfare of the Republic of Latvia and has the competency in the area of gender equality and protection of women's rights.
