The next meeting of the Subcommittee on Human Rights will take place on Thursday 5 February 2015 from 9 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. in meeting room ASP A3G-3.

You can watch our meetings live on line at the link below. Since there are limited possibilities for individuals to attend Subcommittee meetings visitors should register with the Secretariat by email five working days prior to the start of the meeting. Representatives of NGOs as well as other organisations are requested to accede to the EU Transparency Register and follow the procedures therein for access to the European Parliament.

Free Raif Badawi

DROI Members heard a brief update on the case of Raif Badawi, Saudi Arabian blogger who has been given a very harsh long term prison sentence, involving severe corporal punishment by flogging over the course of next 20 weeks. Amnesty International briefed DROI on the latest developments regarding the case, and the EEAS described the EU response so far. The Members strongly denounced the sentence and called for the authorities to refrain from carrying out the flogging punishment and ensure that Mr Badawi is given any medical attention he may require. President Schulz has reacted to the case and DROI Chair has issued a statement.

The flogging sentence of Saudi Arabian human rights defender violates international human rights norms, and must be halted said Elena Valenciano, Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Rights in the European Parliament, on the unjust and inhumane punishment of blogger Raif Badawi: "As the Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Rights, I wish to express my profound concern about the unjust and inhumane sentence now being carried out by the Saudi Arabian authorities against Mr Raif Badawi, a blogger and human rights defender. Press release on the Joint Hearing with the Committee on International Trade held on Wednesday 21 January 2015

 "There is a proliferation of surveillance technologies around the world. It is easy and likely that these technologies, which could be of harm to both human rights and our strategic interests, could fall into the wrong hands", says Marietje Schaake. The Dutch member of ALDE is drafting a report on the impact of digital surveillance on human rights in third countries, a topic discussed 21 January at a hearing organised by the committee on international trade and the subcommittee on human rights.   For full text please see the link below
