At the ECON committee meeting on 25 June, the first ordinary public hearing this year under the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM) will take place with Ms Danièle Nouy, Chair of the Supervisory Board of the ECB.

Such hearings are foreseen under the Regulation establishing the SSM and the related Interinstitutional Agreement between the Parliament and the ECB.

The meeting will take place on 25 June 2015 from 9.30 to 11.00 in room JAN 4Q2 and will be web-streamed.

ECON Members will hold an Economic Dialogue and exchange of views with Janis Reirs, ECOFIN President and Minister for Finance of Latvia. They will discuss the achievements of the Latvian Presidency in the in the ECON areas of competences and latest developments within the European economic governance framework.

The meeting will take on 25 June 2015 from 11.30 to 13.00 place in room JAN4Q2 and will be web-streamed.

Public Hearing on EU Financial Services Regulation: Stocktaking and Challenges

An ambitious reform agenda of the EU financial services legislation has been launched in the aftermath of the financial crisis. Numerous pieces of financial services legislation (level I and level II) have passed through ECON in the last years. These changes in the EU framework for Financial Regulation had and have tremendous effects on the EU financial markets. The hearing aims at examining the current stance of the EU financial services legislation reform considering inter alia its effectiveness,coherence and proportionality. Challenges should be identified and ways forward examined.

The hearing on 16 June 2015 from 15.00 to 16.30 in room JAN 4Q1.

Monetary Dialogue with Mario Draghi, President of the ECB - 15.06.2015

On Monday, 15 June, from 15:00 to 17:00 ECON will welcome ECB's President Mario Draghi for the second Monetary Dialogue of this year. President M. Draghi will present the ECB's perspective on economic and monetary developments before entering in a discussion with Members which will also cover two specific issues:

  •   Quantitative Easing (QE): what are the side effects ?
  •   Sovereign bond purchases and risk sharing arrangements: implications for euro-area monetary policy.

Since the previous Monetary dialogue on 23 March 2015, the ECB  continued its Expanded Asset Purchase Programme which is scheduled to run until September 2016 for a targeted amount of 1.1 trillion of €.

The meeting will take place in Brussels in room JAN 4Q1 and will be web-streamed.

Scrutiny of delegated acts and implementing measures - 19.06.2015

On Tuesday 16 June 2015 from 09.00 to 10:30 the Monthly ECON scrutiny will focus on MiFID/MiFIR delegated acts and implementing measure, including technical standards.

The meeting will take place in Brussels in room JAN 4Q1 and will be web-streamed.

Country-specific recommendations need national owners and social partners

The EU’s country-specific recommendations (CSRs) on economic policy should aim more at boosting growth and jobs and EU countries should feel that they “own” them. Moreover, the social partners must be involved in the process too, said MEPs in Tuesday’s debate with Commission Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis and Commissioners Marianne Thyssen and Pierre Moscovici. The event was jointly organised by the Economic and Monetary Affairs and Employment and Social Affairs committees. (Ler mais)


Euro area economic governance: "Let's make things better", MEPs say

Today’s economic governance rules for the euro area are not working as well as they should. This is because they are too complex, lack ownership and are not consistently enforced, say Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee MEPs in a resolution voted on Tuesday. This draft text, which assesses the record of the economic governance architecture so far and recommends improvements, will become Parliament’s input to the 25 June European Council. (Ler mais)


Capital Markets Union: more investment across the EU and more funds for SMEs

The Capital Markets Union (CMU) should boost the efficient allocation of savings to fund businesses, protect cross-border investors and create a new channel to finance the real economy, said economic and monetary MEPs in a resolution on Tuesday. They want CMU building blocks such as diverse investment choices, risk mitigation and clear investment information across the EU to be in place by 2018 to complement bank financing (Ler mais)


"Ball now in Greek camp" Mario Draghi tells economic and monetary affairs MEPs

The European Central Bank is doing all it can to facilitate a successful outcome of the ongoing talks with Greece, ECB President Mario Draghi assured Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee MEPs on Monday. But he also made it crystal clear that ultimately, disbursing any further financial assistance to Greece is "a political decision that will have to be taken by elected policymakers, not by central bankers".
