The Hearing took place in the frame of the work of the ITRE Committee on the Horizon 2020 implementation report. The report represents the European Parliament's position on the Horizon 2020 interim evaluation which the Commission published in October 2017.

The title of the Hearing "What future for EU-research policy: taking stock and looking ahead" clearly expressed that the European Parliament intended to not only assess the status quo of Horizon 2020 implementation but also to already pave the way for desired features of the next Research Framework Programme 9.

The Hearing addressed the main issues at the core of EU research policy and its future: impact of societal challenges research, questions on the role of innovation policy within H2020, synergies between Horizon 2020 and Structural funds (research excellence versus geographical cohesion) and new societal challenges ahead of us.

The speakers came from a variety of backgrounds all highly relevant to Horizon 2020 implementation and provided their views on activities, challenges and impacts of Horizon 2020 funding.
