The next meeting of the Subcommittee on Human Rights will take place on Wednesday, 6 May 2015 from 9 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and from 3 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. and on Thursday, 7 May from 9 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. in meeting room ASP 3G3.

You can watch our meetings live on line at the link below. Since there are limited possibilities for individuals to attend Subcommittee meetings visitors should register with the Secretariat by email five working days prior to the start of the meeting. Representatives of NGOs as well as other organisations are requested to accede to the EU Transparency Register and follow the procedures therein for access to the European Parliament.

Thousands of migrants attempt crossing the Mediterranean every year, and some of them are saved from drowning by the Frontex operation. But that is not its mission.

"The EU must move from words to actions. Our first obligation is to save their lives", declared DROI Chair Elena Valenciano.

"I welcome the announcement of an extraordinary meeting of the European Council next Thursday to address this human tragedy. I call on all the Member States and the EU institutions involved to come up with consistent and specific measures to translate our commitments into real actions".  For the full statement please see below

Hearing on the situation of the Roma minority in third countries

Thursday 23 April, the European Parliament's Subcommittee on Human Rights will organise a hearing on the situation of the Roma minority in third countries, with a focus on the Western Balkans. Members will discuss the situation of Roma minority in the Western Balkans, including their social inclusion, gender issues and discrimination, as well the EU response, especially the financial support via  pre-accession funds (IPA) to tackle the serious challenges faced by the Roma people.

The need for a balance in supply and demand side interventions in the fight against human trafficking was highlighted in a human rights subcommittee hearing on Thursday morning. MEPs debated with Beate Andrees from ILO, Sebastian Boll, from UN-ACT and Markéta Hronková, from La Strada Czech Republic, on the various facets of human trafficking and the EU response.

Democracy and values are problematic in DRC, says Denis Mukwege

Dr Denis Mukwege, the 2014 Sakharov Prize laureate, described political problems in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and his difficulties in tackling the problem of sexual abuse of women and even small children, in a Human Rights Subcommittee debate on Thursday. MEPs discussed how the EU could best support Dr Mukwege’s work, and some called for legally-binding rules on trade in conflict minerals. (Mai mult)
