Vote on controversial Fisheries Partnership Agreements with Mauritania

On 29 May, PECH Committee will vote on Fisheries Partnership Agreements with Mauritania 2012/0258(NLE) that has proved controversial. The Rapporteur MATO (PPE) takes the position that consent should not be given as it is not to the EU’s advantage being economically unviable and is not to Mauritania’s advantage either. Other members have taken the contrary position.

Vote on cods

On 23 April at 10.50, PECH Members adopted two draft reports by Diane Dodds (NI) on Amendment of Council Regulation (EC) No 1342/2008 of 18 December 2008 establishing a long-term plan for cod stocks and the fisheries exploiting those stocks 2012/0013(COD) and 2012/0236(COD). One of the files is an alignment to the Lisbon Treaty, the other substantial changes to the management plan for the cod stocks. The substantial changes seek to adapt the current plan to developments regarding the sustainability of the stock since its adoption.

Prevent, deter and eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing

On 23 April at 10.40, PECH Members adopted the report by Raul ROMEVA (Greens) on amendments of Council Regulation (EC) No 1005/2008 establishing a Community system to prevent, deter and eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. The Commission proposal is part of the alignment to the Lisbon Treaty. The Regulation establishes a Community system to prevent, deter and eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing in Community and international waters.

Hearing by EFCA : Tools to improve a culture of compliance in European Fisheries

On 22 April at 15.00, PECH Committee organised a hearing in collaboration with the European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA): Tools to improve a culture of compliance in European Fisheries, in room PHS 7C050. The Chair of the Committee on Fisheries opened the hearing introducing the experts. Following an introduction by Holmquist, Chair of the Administrative Board of the EFCA, there were two panels of experts. The first panel presentéd the enforcement scheme, and the following one discussed about new opportunities and challenges for compliance provided with the reformed Common Fisheries Policy.

Hlavnou otázkou, o ktorú sa náš výbor zasadzuje počas tohto volebného obdobia, je nepochybne prebiehajúca reforma spoločnej rybárskej politiky. Práve na nej sa Európsky parlament podieľa prostredníctvom spolurozhodovacích právomocí, ktoré  získal po nadobudnutí účinnosti Lisabonskej zmluvy. Politika v oblasti rybného hospodárstva musí skĺbiť rozličné záujmy s cieľom zabezpečiť dlhodobú udržateľnosť morského prostredia, populácií rýb, záujmy rybárov, súvisiacich priemyselných odvetví a pobrežných komunít. Súčasná politika má mnoho nedostatkov a práve nimi sú všetky tri inštitúcie zapojené do reformy rozhodnuté sa zaoberať.
 
Ak budú občania neustále a riadne informovaní o vytváraní politických rozhodnutí, ktoré budú prijaté v ich mene, môže to byť pre tento proces iba prínosom, a tak verím, že aj táto stránka môže byť nápomocná, pretože poskytne občanom pohľad do našich každodenných činností.
