Exchange of views on Ecuador joining the EU Trade Agreement with Peru/Colombia

End of July, a political agreement was reached between the EU and Ecuadorians negotiators on Ecuador joining the multi-party Free Trade Agreement between the EU and Peru/Colombia. Before entering into force, this trade agreement needs to be submitted for consent to the European Parliament. The Commission will brief Members of the Committee on International Trade on the result of the negotiations and discuss future steps for its entry into force.

Exchange of views on EU-Russia trade sanctions

INTA will hold an exchange of views focusing on the EU/Russia trade relations with the special focus on the impact of the mutual sanctions introduced last summer, on the EU market. The EU adopted economic restrictions against Russia which targeted Russian state-owned banks, imposed an arms embargo and restricted sales of sensitive technology and equipment for the Russia's oil industry. In retaliation, Russia imposed sanctions targeting imports of certain agricultural products, raw materials and food originating from the EU. These mutual sanctions are already having a negative effect on the EU producers and, should they persist, they could have a longer-lasting impact on growth and jobs.

World Trade Organisation at a critical juncture- exchange of views with EU Ambassador

For the first time in its almost 20-year history, the WTO succeeded in concluding a mulitlateral agreement at the ninth Ministerial Conference in Indonesia in December 2013. The EU Ambassador to the WTO, Angelos Pangratis, will come to the Committee on International Trade for an exchange of views on the current state of play and future prospects for concluding the remainder of what is known as the Doha Development Agenda, which was launched in 2001.

The EU's response to the crisis in Ukraine was in the spotlight at Parliament this week, following President Schulz's warning to EU leaders last Saturday of the dangers of escalation and his plea for a political solution to the crisis. He called on the EU to play a more ambitious international role and said it must give Ukraine the financial and political help needed to remain a unified and independent country.
