Deal on rules to help elderly and disabled people access online public services

Public sector bodies' websites and mobile applications will have to be made accessible to everyone, under a provisional deal struck by Parliament and Council negotiators on Tuesday night. Over 167 million EU citizens have a disability (either medical or due to age) which prevents them accessing data and services on the Internet, e.g. to file a tax declaration, apply for an allowance, pay fees or register a child at school. MEPs call for a more innovative single market, stripped of unjustified barriers

Ways to unleash the full potential of the single market to the benefit of consumers, employees and businesses, in particular start-ups, are proposed in a report voted by Internal Market Committee MEPs on Thursday. Priorities include eliminating unjustified barriers to trade, helping SMEs and start-ups to scale up their activities, reforming VAT rules, developing legislative tools to foster the sharing economy and building a strong culture of compliance and enforcement. Gun control: MEPs debate changes to firearms proposal to make it fit for purpose

Amendments tabled by Parliament's lead MEP to a Commission proposal to revise the EU firearms directive were discussed in the Internal Market Committee on Wednesday. Concern to close loopholes in European gun laws and strike a balance between the right to own certain types of firearms and appropriate risk controls shaped the changes tabled by committee chair and rapporteur on this file, Vicky Ford (ECR, UK). Utskottet för den inre marknaden och konsumentskydd ansvarar för att se över lagstiftningen och granska EU-reglerna om den fria rörligheten för varor och tjänster, den fria rörligheten för arbetstagare, tullpolitiken, standardisering och konsumenternas ekonomiska intressen.  Utskottets ledamöter arbetar med att undanröja hinder för ekonomisk handel och förenkla lagstiftningen för att öka konkurrenskraften på hela den inre marknaden, samtidigt som man tar hänsyn till konsumentintressena på en lång rad områden.
