Parliament approves Mr Mimica as Commissioner for Consumer Policy
565 votes in favour, 64 against and 64 abstentions: the European Parliament has adopted a decision approving the appointment of Mr Mimica as Commissioner responsible for Consumer Policy. It is now up to the Council of the European Union to appoint Mr Mimica formally by qualified majority for the remainder of the Commission's term of office, until 31.10.14.
Plenary vote on Mr Mimica's appointment, 12.06.13
The European Parliament will vote on whether or not to approve the appointment of Commissioner-designate Mimica by majority of votes cast and by secret ballot. Following a positive vote in Parliament, Mr Mimica can then be formally appointed by the Council of the European Union by qualified majority for the remainder of the Commission's term of office, which runs until 31.10.14.
Evaluation of hearing of Mr Mimica
On 04.06.13 in the afternoon, during a meeting behind closed doors, the coordinators of the Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection will express their opinion on Mr Mimica's suitability as Commissioner for Consumer Policy. Their conclusions, which will take into account the opinion of the Committee associated in the procedure, will be examined by the Conference of Committee Chairs on 05.06.13 and then conveyed to the Conference of Presidents. Unless it decides to seek further information, the Conference of Presidents will declare the hearing closed on 06.06.13. It is then up to the European Parliament as a whole to express its position officially during the plenary sitting of 12.06.13.
Members to quiz Mr Mimica on political priorities
The Commissioner-designate is invited to a hearing before the Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection, in association with the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety. Members will have the opportunity to evaluate Mr Mimica on the basis of his general competence, European commitment and personal independence. They will assess his knowledge of his prospective portfolio and his priorities in this area. The hearing will take place on 04.06.13, from 09.30 to 12.30 in room JAN 4Q2 and will be webstreamed.
In view of Croatia's accession to the European Union on 01.07.13, Mr Neven Mimica, Commissioner-designate for Consumer Policy, will be heard by the Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection, with the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety associated, on 04.06.13, from 0930 to 1230. On 02.05.13, the Council had consulted Parliament on its intention to appoint Mr Mimica, and the President of the Commission confirmed his intention to entrust the consumer portfolio to Mr Mimica on the same day.
