Statement of 7 June 2017 on the terror attack in Teheran

Mr Janusz Lewandowski, Chair of the Delegation for relations with Iran:

On behalf of the Delegation of the European Parliament for the relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran, I wish to express my deep condolences for the victims of the terror attack perpetrated against the Iranian Majilis and other targets in Teheran.

In the European Union we strongly believe that any form of terrorism is a violation to the basic principles of human civilization. An attack to the institution representing the citizens' voice it is also a symbolic attack to the values of democracy.

Along with our colleagues of the Majlis we stress that terror will not prevail - in Iran, Europe or anywhere else - and that solidarity and cooperation are the only effective answers to address those criminal threats

Mr. Janusz Lewandowski, Chairman of the Delegation for relations with Iran:

On behalf of the Delegation, I congratulate the negotiators for their endurance and commitment to reaching this important agreement. The historic compromise was reached after nearly a decade of international and intercontinental diplomatic endeavours.

This is a day of historic importance for the entire world, but especially for the people of Iran. They have been suffering under sanctions and the country's isolation. I do hope that this new situation will have a positive impact on their well-being and will lead to improvement of the human rights situation in the country

Statement of 22 October 2014 on the situation of Nasrin Sotoudeh

Mr Janusz Lewandowski, Chairman of the Delegation for relations with Iran:

I would like to express my concern over the situation of Ms Nasrin Sotoudeh, Iranian human rights lawyer and Sakharov Prize Laureate 2012.

I was disappointed to learn that an investigation panel of Tehran's Bar Association communicated a decision to Ms Nasrin Sotoudeh that her law license is to be suspended for three years.

Ms Nasrin Sotoudeh has taken on high profile human rights cases and has represented journalists and activists. She received the European Parliament Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in 2012 as a message of solidarity and recognition of a lawyer who had not bowed to fear and intimidation
