The Delegation covers relations with the ten countries of Southeast Asia which are members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), i.e. Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, and with the ASEAN organisation itself.
It believes it is necessary to strengthen the parliamentary dimension of EU-ASEAN relations. To this end, the Delegation holds regular meetings to examine developments in the respective countries and the entire region covering topics such as trade, economic and social development, human rights issues, rule of law and good governance, security, migration and regional cooperation. Often, meetings are conducted in cooperation with parliamentary committees inviting stakeholders from other EU institutions, international and civil society organisations and academia. Moreover, members of the Delegation participate in a number of missions to the region and hold interparliamentary meetings with the national parliaments of the ASEAN countries. Finally yet importantly, some members of the Delegation also represent the European Parliament at the annual meetings of the ASEAN Interparliamentary Assembly (AIPA), in which the European Parliament has an observer status.
