The EU-North Macedonia Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) held its 16th meeting in Strasbourg on 28 March 2019 under the joint Chairmanship of Mr Alojz PETERLE, Chair of the EP delegation and Mr Goran MILEVSKI, Chair of the Sobranie delegation.

Members of the European Parliament delegation to the JPC met their counterparts from the Sobranie to discuss the state of play of the EU-North Macedonia relations, preparations for accession negotiations and future prospects.

The Committee included exchanges of views with:

- Mr Andrej ZERNOVSKI, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of North Macedonia

- Mr David CULLEN, Head of Unit for North Macedonia, Kosovo, DG NEAR, European Commission

- Mr Clive RUMBOLD, Deputy Head of Division 'Western Balkans', European External Action Service

- Mr Ivo VAJGL, European standing Parliament's rapporteur on North Macedonia.

The EU - former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) held its 14th meeting in Strasbourg on 7-8 February 2018 under the joint Chairmanship of Mr Goran MILEVSKI and Mr Alojz PETERLE.

The Committee included exchanges of views on the following topics:

Implementation of the 3-6-9 Plan and of the Recommendations of the Senior Experts' Group on systemic Rule of Law issues, with emphasis on:

  • Judicial reforms
  • Electoral reforms
  • Reforms in the work of the Parliament
  • Media reforms
  • Public administration reforms
  • Cooperation with the civil society

Inter-ethnic relations, neighbourhood and regional cooperation:

  • Implementation of Ohrid Framework Agreement
  • New law on languages
  • Follow-up of the Trieste summit

The Berlin process:

  • Special focus on the efforts of the EP mediation unit with a long-term perspective to incorporate young parliamentarians from WB countries

The EU - former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) held its 13th meeting in Skopje on 3-4 December 2015 under the joint Chairmanship of Mr Kenan HASIPI (Democratic Party of Turks, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) and Mr Alojz PETERLE (EPP, Slovenia).

The Committee included exchanges of views on the following topics:
  • relations between the European Union (EU) and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia;
  • implementation of the 2 June and 15 July agreements and the targets of the High Level Accession Dialogue with particular focus on:
    - the rule of Law, judiciary reform and fight against corruption;
    - electoral reform and forthcoming parliamentary elections;
    - freedom of media;
    - inter-community dialogue;
  • the migration crisis: challenges, management and possible consequences.

Bureau meeting 21-22 July 2015, Skopje

The Bureau of the EU - former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) met in Skopje on 21-22 July 2015.

12th EP-former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia JPC, 26-27 November 2014, Strasbourg

The EU - former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia Joint Parliamentary Committee held its 12th meeting in Strasbourg on 26-27 November 2014 under the joint Chairmanship of Mr Alojz PETERLE (EPP, Slovenia) and Mr Kenan HASIPI (DPT, former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia).

The Co-Chairs underline the importance of the JPC as an important platform of inter- parliamentary contacts and discussions and welcome the organisation of the 12th JPC meeting in the new mandate, after elections to both parliaments.

Views were exchanged on the following subjects:
  • bilateral relations;
  • political situation in the country after the early parliamentary elections in 2014;
  • rule of law, reforms in the field of judiciary and public administration, and fight against corruption;
  • freedom of expression and media;
  • economic and financial developments;
  • good neighborly relations and regional cooperation within the SEECP context.

11th EP-former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia JPC, 22-23 May 2013, Strasbourg

The EU - Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia Joint Parliamentary Committee held its 11th meeting in Strasbourg on 22-23 May 2013 under the joint Chairmanship of Mr Jorgo CHATZIMARKAKIS (ALDE, Germany) and Mr Kenan HASIPI (Democratic Party of Turks, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia).

The Joint Parliamentary Committee addressed the following issues:
  • relations between the European Union (EU) and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia;
  • recent developments in the context of the High Level Accession Dialogue:
    - rule of law, incl. inter-community dialogue, judicial and administrative reforms, the fight against corruption;
    - freedom of expression and the media;
    - electoral reform with a view to the local elections held on 24 March and 7 April;
    - strengthening market economy by increasing social cohesion;
    - good neighbourly relations;
    - alternative ways for use of renewable energy sources.

10th EP-former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia JPC, 7 June 2012, Brussels

The EU - Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia Joint Parliamentary Committee held its 10th meeting in Brussels on 7 June 2012 under the joint Chairmanship of Mr Jorgo CHATZIMARKAKIS (ALDE, Germany) and Mr Kenan HASIPI (Democratic Party of Turks, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia).

The Joint Parliamentary Committee addressed:
  • bilateral relations
  • developments in the country in the context of the High Level Accession Dialogue (HLAD), in particular:
    - inter-community relations and review of the implementation of the Ohrid Framework Agreement (OFA);
    - reforms in the field of judiciary and public administration;
    - freedom of media and the recent dialogue between the government and media representatives;
    - fight against corruption and organised crime;
  • economic situation in the country: strategies of the government for overcoming current challenges;
  • regional waste management and alternative energy sources.

9th EP-former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia JPC, 3-4 November 2011, Skopje

The EU - Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) held its 9th meeting in Skopje on 3-4 November 2011 under the joint Chairmanship of Mr Jorgo CHATZIMARKAKIS (ALDE, Germany) and Mr Kenan HASIPI (Democratic Party of Turks, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia).

The JPC addressed:
  • bilateral relations;
  • the 10th Anniversary of the Ohrid Framework Agreement, in the context of the cultural diversity in the state;
  • reforms of public administration, the judiciary, the fight against corruption and organised crime, and current visa liberalisation developments;
  • civil society and citizens' participation in decision-making process, the freedom of expression and media;
  • economic situation, crisis in the Eurozone and the effects on the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia;
  • transport corridors in the state and the use of European funds for their implementation.
