Welcome from the Chair

Welcome to the pages of the European Parliament's Delegation for relations with the United States of America (D-US).

As the newly-elected Chair of this 64-member strong delegation, I have the honour of presiding over our regular meetings in Brussels and Strasbourg, many of which are webstreamed live and can be followed on this website.

I will also have the privilege of co-chairing the inter-parliamentary meetings (IPMs) we hold twice a year with colleagues from the House of Representatives of the United States Congress, together with US Co-Chair Rep. Nathaniel Moran (Republican, Texas).

Our next meeting will be the 88th EU-US IPM, which demonstrates the deep and long-standing nature of the ties between EU and US parliamentarians.

During these joint meetings, our debates focus on specific areas of common competence of our two legislatures and on practical ways of enhancing our cooperation further.

Both the US and the EU currently face a wide range of pressing individual and collective challenges. In this uncertain context, the relationship between our two bodies has become more important than ever.

I am convinced that our personal ties, our interlinked economies, our shared history and our common values are the ingredients that will continue to make the transatlantic relationship so enduring.

Members of the European Parliament joined representatives from the U.S. Congress in Washington DC on December 1 and 2. The legislators' meeting was led by co-chairs Radosław Sikorski on the EU side and Nathaniel Moran on the US side.

Legislators on both sides of the Atlantic have similar concerns. What dominated the agenda were discussions on support for Ukraine, food security, energy, China, the situation in the Middle East, and the development of Artificial Intelligence. They had a chance to listen to and discuss with the leading experts in these areas.

''The shared history and common values that bind our alliance together - democracy, the rule of law, and freedom - remain our key compass in this era of geopolitical strife and rise in authoritarianism that we are living'' - underlined the European and American legislators in the joint statement after this 87th meeting of the Transatlantic Legislators' Dialogue (TLD). Statement on the US-EU summit of 20 October 2023

19-10-2023 - 21:34
BY THE CHAIR OF THE COMMITTEE ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS, DAVID McALLISTER, AND THE CHAIR OF THE DELEGATION FOR RELATIONS WITH THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, RADOSŁAW SIKORSKI

Now, more than ever, as we witness global challenges to the international order and stability, the transatlantic partnership between the European Union and the United States of America needs to be stronger than ever. We must continue to defend democracy, the rule of law, and international rules.

For the members of our respective Committee and Delegation, a summit between the US and the EU is always an important moment. The forthcoming summit of 20 October 2023 in Washington DC, the second one under the administration of President Joe Biden, who has proven his commitment to transatlantic cooperation, comes at a crucial moment.

The European Parliament acknowledges the numerous achievements accomplished since the previous summit in 2021, particularly in the area of security and defence, where we must further strengthen and deepen our cooperation. The decisive EU-US response to counter the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine as well as mitigation of the destabilising political and economic effects it has created across the world serve as an example of what we can achieve when we work together. We must provide continued military and economic support to Ukraine for as long as it takes. Ukrainians do not only fight for their own country's sovereignty, but for our transatlantic values, freedoms, and security. We must also pay urgent attention to the emerging crisis in the Middle East, after the barbaric terrorist attack of Hamas against Israel. We also count on US support to bolster EU defence.

The summit must also discuss the multi-layered challenges posed by China. We look forward to the results of the investigation into Chinese subsidies for electric vehicles launched by the European Commission and welcome the new EU anti-coercion instrument. We also need to bolster the activities of the EU-US Trade and Technology Council, to produce tangible results on confronting malign disinformation and mitigating the risks involved in the development of artificial intelligence.

The EU and the US should also take the opportunity of this summit to address obstacles to transatlantic trade, notably on steel and aluminum. Equally, both sides should work to advance a critical minerals agreement that would alleviate any discriminating effects of the subsidies granted under the US Inflation Reduction Act. We must show the world that the EU and the US work together to address our challenges.

As European legislators, we look forward to assessing the results of this important summit, together with our American peers - the members of Congress - at the forthcoming 87th Transatlantic Legislators' Dialogue meeting in early December. As representatives of our citizens, we also have an important role to demonstrate the real benefits of this close transatlantic cooperation.

D-US Bureau Members hold meetings in Washington D.C., 19-21 July 2022

02-08-2022 - 10:00
Radosław Sikorski, Chair of the Delegation for relations with the United States, and Vice-Chairs Miapetra Kumpula-Natri and Nicolae Ştefănuță, will be in Washington D.C. for an official visit from 19 to 21 July 2022.

This official delegation builds on and follows up on the very positive inter-parliamentary meeting between the European Parliament and the US Congress held in Paris on 21-22 May 2022, and looks at the next inter-parliamentary meeting with the US Congress foreseen for December 2022.

During their official visit, Mr Sikorski, Ms Kumpula-Natri and Mr Ştefănuță will hold extensive consultations in the US Congress (both at the House of Representatives and in the Senate) and with the US Administration. The discussions will focus on policy issues of common concern between the United States and the European Union and on how to further Transatlantic dialogue and cooperation and, particularly, inter-parliamentary cooperation for the future. The war of aggression against Ukraine has attested to the capacity of the US and the EU to deliver rapidly and effectively together in support of Ukraine, to the importance of a strong transatlantic bond and policy response to tackle issues such as energy security and disinformation, and to reaffirm the primacy of democratic values and foster a coalition of like-minded countries to this effect. These same topics will be at the centre of the consultations held in Washington DC.
