Motion for a European Parliament resolution on promoting EU funding for tourism  

The European Parliament,

–       having regard to the financial instruments for the tourism sector for the 2014-2020 programming period,

–       having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.     whereas Europe is the most popular tourist destination in the world, and whereas its tourism industry generates more than 10 % of the EU's GDP and employs 9.7 million people;

B.     whereas tourism is of key importance for economic development and employment in Italy, in particular in southern parts of the country;

C.     whereas the EU makes a number of funding sources available for the tourism and cultural sectors and for promoting sustainable, high-quality tourism;

D.     whereas Italy is one of the last Member States to make use of the funds made available by the EU;

1.      Calls on the Commission to promote the EU funding made available for tourism more effectively by training experts to provide project start-up support and simplifying the procedures for gaining access to the funds.
