MOTION FOR A RESOLUTION on the fight against Islamic State and the need to lift sanctions against the Syrian Arab Republic

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the fight against Islamic State and the need to lift sanctions against the Syrian Arab Republic

The European Parliament,

–       having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.     whereas the Islamist terrorist group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant poses a grave threat to security in the Middle East and throughout the world with the jihadist movement that it is organising;

B.     whereas support for the Syrian regime, despite the serious human rights abuses it has committed, now constitutes the last bastion against Islamic State;

1.      Calls on the Commission to review the European Union positions that impose unilateral sanctions against the Syrian regime, and expresses its wish for EU Member States to restore diplomatic relations with the Syrian Arab Republic as soon as possible;

2.      Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission.
