MOTION FOR A RESOLUTION on animal welfare and the buffalo species in Europe

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on animal welfare and the buffalo species in Europe

The European Parliament,

–   having regard to the lack of information on animal welfare for the buffalo species,

 

–   having regard to the possible repercussions arising from this lack of information which could seriously jeopardise the welfare of this species,

 

–   having regard to the actions of European and non-European animal rights associations,

 

–   having regard to the need to complete and supplement legislation in force on animal welfare in the buffalo sector, one it is mistakenly believed can be superimposed on the bovine sector,

 

–   having regard to the importance of highlighting the ethological specificity of species Bubalus bubalis,

 

–   having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

 

A. whereas there is a greater awareness of animal welfare in the minds of public opinion in the EU;

 

B. whereas EU regulatory measures have been introduced in which even livestock are classified as ‘sentient beings’;

 

1.  Calls on the Commission to define the principles, criteria and evaluations suitable for use in testing and adopting best business management processes that will ensure the welfare of Bubalus bubalis during all stages of intensive and extensive buffalo farming.
