Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the call to renew the exemption from the restriction on the use of lead for crystal glass production
B8-0780/2015

The European Parliament,

–       having regard to Directive 2011/65/EC of 8 June 2011 on the restriction on the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment,

–       having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.     whereas the 2011 directive seeks to restrict the use of certain dangerous substances, including lead, in the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment;

B.     whereas the production of crystal glass is exempt from any restrictions until 2016 on the basis of Directive 69/493/EEC of 15 December 1969 on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to crystal glass;

C.     whereas the potential withdrawal of the exemption poses a threat to the most prestigious French producers of crystal glass, and whereas, in France, this industry directly and indirectly provides 7 000 jobs which would be lost if the exemption is not renewed;

D.     whereas there is no substitute for lead in the production of crystal glass;

1.      Calls on the Commission to renew the exemption from the restriction on the use of lead for crystal glass production.
