on closing down the European Asylum Support Office

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on closing down the European Asylum Support Office  

The European Parliament,

–       having regard to the Convention of 28 July 1951 relating to the status of refugees (also known as the 'Geneva Convention'),

–       having regard to Regulation (EU) No 439/2010,

–       having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.     whereas the role of the European Asylum Support Office (EASO) is to 'strengthen practical cooperation among Member States on asylum', provide 'support to Member States subject to particular pressure on their asylum [...] systems' and 'improve the implementation of the Common European Asylum System';

B.     whereas in 2014 the number of people seeking asylum in the EU rose to 625 000 – an increase of 44% over the figure for 2013,

C.     whereas the EASO, which has a budget of EUR 10.5 million, is entirely funded from the EU budget;

1.      Calls for the EASO to be closed down and for the Member States to be free to run their own migration policies;

2.      Instructs its President to forward this resolution, together with the names of the signatories, to the Commission and to the Council.
